The interaction of ionizing radiation with water generates three radical intermediates (e{sub aq}{sup -}, OH{sup .}, H{sup .}) and three molecular and ionic species (H{sub 2}, H{sub 2}O{sub 2}, H{sup +}) with well-established stoichiometries. Hydrated electrons and OH{sup .} radicals are very reactive reducing and oxidizing agents, respectively; OH{sup .} and H{sup .} rapidly undergo H-abstraction and multiple bond addition reactions. The reactions of the primary radicals with solutes (e.g., e{sub aq}{sup -} + O{sub 2}, OH{sup .} + HCO{sub 2}{sup -}, H{sup .} + (CH{sub 3}){sub 2}CHOH) yields secondary radicals (O{sub 2}{sup .-}, CO{sub 2}{sup .-} (CH{sub 3}){sub 2}COH), which have their own well-characterized redox, acid-base, and coordination chemistry. In this tutorial, the properties of the various radiation-generated intermediates in aqueous solution will be reviewed, and their applications to inorganic and bio-inorganic chemistry will be considered.
