The separation of metal cations is a fundamental chemical process, the selectivity of which is a primary limitation in many technologies. In particular, the treatment of nuclear waste at the Department of Energy`s Hanford, WA site presents many challenging separation problems. One of these is the separation of parts- per-million concentrations of the generally long-lived actinide isotopes from larger volumes of non-radioactive chemical waste. Successful separations of the actinides require ligands that will strongly, and selectively, bind actinide ions. Molecular versions of such ligands have been studied in a different part of this research program for many years. In particular, molecular hydroxypyridinones have proven effective for chelating actinides as in vivo decorporation agents. A similar approach has been taken in the development of ion exchange separation techniques. A series of solid-supported chelating resins employing the hydroxypyridinone functionality have been synthesized and characterized. These results will be discussed in terms of their general environmental and waste remediation applications.
