The Lance Coal of Wyoming has been the subject of intense organic geochemical and organic petrographic study over the past two decades. Hydrous pyrolysis experiments on Lance Coals (published elsewhere) have shown it to be a prolific source of gaseous and liquid hydrocarbons. Additionally, during hydrous pyrolysis experiments these coals produce abundant aqueous carboxylic acids. However, Fourier transform infra red spectroscopy (FTIR) studies carried out on the coal starting material and several solid-phase hydrous pyrolysis experimental end-products indicate the presence of little carbonyl carbon and perhaps no carboxylic functional groups in these coals. This indicates that the aqueous carboxylic acids evolved during hydrous pyrolysis experiments likely derive from chemical interaction between water and coal kerogen in the reactor. The major changes in chemical functionality observed in FTIR studies of the solid product of the hydrous pyrolysis experiments indicate an increase in aromatic functionalities at the expense of aliphatic functionalities with increasing maturity. These observations are supported by solid phase CP/MAS {sup 13}C NMR and Discrete Scanning Calorimetry studies on the same sample suite.
