Laboratory batch studies showed that in the presence of elemental iron filings, a large percentage of trichlorethene was completely dechlorinated, producing ethene and other alkenes/alkanes as end products. 1,1-Dichloroethene (DCE), cis-DCE and vinyl chloride were also observed as reaction byproducts. Attempts to use {sup 14}C-labeled TCE to achieve carbon balance were unsuccessful. However, an innovative approach using zero-head space extractors yielded improved results. Three sources of iron filings were used in the research: Fisher Scientific, Columbus Chemical Industries, Inc. and Master Builders, Inc. With a solid to solution ratio of 1:5, the half-time of the reduction was between 7 to 12 hours, depending on the sources of iron.
