We have been making measurements of low molecular weight carbonyl compounds in Denver`s atmosphere for about seven years. These studies have been focused on the quantitation of formaldehyde and acetaldehyde through the early years, and have added acetone beginning in February 1993. From these studies, we have learned a lot about the diurnal and seasonal variability of formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and acetone concentrations in downtown Denver. These studies have provided considerable information on the sources and sinks for these compounds. This data has also been analyzed in an attempt to assess the impact of oxygenated fuels (methyl tertiary butyl ether - MTBE and ethanol blended fuels) use on the concentrations of these carbonyl compounds in Denver`s air. There appears to have been a statistically significant increase in formaldehyde concentrations measured during the more recent years of oxygenated fuels use, compared to the early years. We have also concluded that during the winter motor vehicles are a major source of formaldehyde and these emissions exceed one metric ton per day for the Denver Metropolitan area.
