Field measurements of the chemical composition of boundary-layer clouds are presented as a background, {open_quote}clean-air{close_quote} reference point for comparison to anthropogenically influenced cloudwater composition. Samples collected during May 1993 were analyzed for major ions and trace elements using IC and ICP-MS. Aerosol concentration, cloud liquid water content, precipitation, and air mass trajectory were examined with a statistical model and identified as the factors controlling marine cloudwater composition. Size-dependant solute concentrations were identified for Na, Mg, Ca, Cl, and K; large droplets had higher concentrations than small droplets.
