With the advent of ion chromatography, the determination of inorganic anions in aqueous solutions has been relatively straightforward. However, there are significant complications when ion chromatography is used to determine trace concentrations of inorganic anions in brine matrices. The analysis is further complicated when only a limited sample volume is available. A Danes DX-100 ion chromatograph is used with the new Danes AS12/AG12 columns and suppressed conductivity detection. A mixed eluent system is used in order to analyze anions in the complex matrices of the brines. The sample introduction procedure will also be described. In the brine matrices, nitrate, orthophosphate, and sulfate ions can be determined within 5% accuracy and fluoride ion can be determined within 10% accuracy.
