Porous materials are the cornerstone of size exclusion chromatography. The synthesis of new porous materials can provide future generations of supports for the analysis of macromolecules. An overview of the origins of porosity in rigid polymeric materials will be presented. With this background, the synthesis and characterization of a new family of porous materials will be described. The materials, bridged polysilsesquioxanes, are hybrids of inorganic oxides and organic network polymers. They are synthesized by a molecular building block approach using sol-gel chemistry. The pore profile of these materials is determined in part by the choice of molecular building block and the processing conditions. Inverse size exclusion chromatography (ISEC) is used to aid in the analysis of the pore structure of these materials. Possible applications of these materials as supports for size exclusion chromatography will also be discussed.
