Electrochromatography is utilized to separate a mixture of 16 different polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). A 20-30 cm section of a 75 {mu}m inside diameter fused-silica capillary column is packed with 3 {mu}m octadecylsilane (C-18) particles. A potential (up to 30 kV) is applied across the capillary column to generate electroosmotic flow. An intracavity-doubled argon-ion laser beam (257 nm) is used to detect the PAHs by laser-induced fluorescence. Efficiencies up to 400,000 plates per meter are obtained, and the reproducibility of the peak retention times is better than 2% (RSD). The limits of detection for the PAHs range between 10{sup -17}-10{sup -20} moles with a linear response spanning 4 orders of magnitude in concentration.
