Cellular automata (CA) and the related lattice gas are effective models for many dynamic systems. The minisymposium on cellular automata and lattice gas in this conference presents some of the advanced applications. In non-trivial applications, the computational complexity of cellular automata can be prohibitive for conventional hardware platforms. Special architectures have been proposed and built. A recent example is the CAM-8 built at MIT. Another direction is to take advantage of general purpose parallel computers, such as the CM-5, KSR, and MasPar MP-2 machines. The CA applications developed on these unconventional platforms however are programmed in parallel extensions of sequantial programming languages. The extensions of the languages are machine dependent. The code therefore suffers from poor portability.
