  1. CSIR, Johannesburg (South Africa). Division of Mining Technology
Multiseam mining has been carried out at many collieries in South Africa. If the seams are in close proximity difficult and dangerous mining conditions may arise. In the Witbank area multiseam bord and pillar mining has been carried out, while in Natal where the seams are thinner and of a higher quality, total extraction methods are common. Several combinations of multiseam mining have been carried out. The paper highlights a number of case studies and the strata control problems that can arise.
