Rapid site characterization with USRADS
- Chemrad Tennessee Corp., Oak Ridge, TN (United States)
This paper describes the case history of two recent projects where rapid site characterizations were performed using commercially available geophysical and radiological instruments interfaced to an innovative tracking and mapping system called USRADS (UltraSonic Ranging And Data System). USRADS automates data location, collection, and presentation functions for site characterization. USRADS uses ultrasonics to provide real-time surveyor positioning and radio links to transmit the surveyor data to an on-site computer for stage and real-time display. USRADS uses a standard personal computer for data collection and includes real-time color display of the findings. It includes numerous statistical routines and display formats for immediate on-site analysis, as well as utilities to facilitate further analysis of the findings and consolidation with other graphic information systems. The objective of one project was to characterize the near subsurface characteristics of a 9 acre site and to map the respective boundaries of any findings. The second was to locate and map the presence of burial trenches at a 24 acre radioactive waste disposal site and to characterize the site for ionizing radiation.
