Measurement of oscillation amplitude by the homodyne technique using higher harmonics

The application of the homodyne technique to measuring the amplitudes of mechanical vibrations using the amplitudes of the spectral components of the detected laser signal is discussed. Restrictions on the vibration amplitudes measured by the spectral homodyne techniques are given. A simple method is proposed for amplitudes of oscillations larger than the laser wavelength.
