The design of an electric-discharge cw laser with transverse pumping, ultraviolet preionization, and cooling of the gas in a heat exchanger filled with liquid nitrogen is described. The laser wavelength can be switched from 10.6 to 5 {mu}m by replacing CO{sub 2} with CO. The output power in both cases is about 1 kW. This design can be used to build powerful engineering lasers.
