To provide characterization data on atmospheric fluidized-bed (AFBC) by-products and to determine how key physical and chemical properties of solid by-products affect options for disposal and reuse, researchers conducted extensive laboratory tests. Project studies included tests to examine physical, engineering, chemical, and leaching properties of two classes of AFBC by-products. The samples came from two of North America`s largest AFBC pilot demonstration units: a bubbling-bed combustor at the Tennessee Valley Authority`s Shawnee Fluidized-Bed Combustion Facility near Paducah, Kentucky, and from the Tri-State Utilities` Nucla Station circulating-bed demonstration boiler near Nucla, Colorado. While material characterization data indicated that most AFBC by-products can be handled similar to {open_quotes}western{close_quotes} Type C fly ash, some changes in conventional by-product management practices will be needed. These changes include special transport designs, use of dry transport systems, and special site engineering for leachate control. Several potential applications for AFBC by-products were identified in the study. These included uses as soil amending agents, industrial raw materials, building products, and as a source of lime for controlling acidic wastes.
