In switchgear, composite insulators are exposed to specific conditions: switching of electrical arc, permanent current, mechanical operations, dielectric gradients, etc. Then, these insulators must withstand electro-dynamic forces, electrical arc radiation, temperature, decomposed SF{sub 6}, or ambient pollution. Different kinds of technologies are available for these hollow insulators, that may behave differently. Tests were performed on glass/epoxy samples. They gave information on the ability of composite or bonding agents to withstand temperature or decomposed SF{sub 6}. Then 72.5 kV silicone rubber shedded insulators were submitted to pressure, bending, aging, leak tests, partial discharge tests, salt fog and pollution flashover tests, etc. The results demonstrated that attention must be given to the degradation of the composite tube under deflexion, and to the tightness of the composite insulator before and after mechanical tests. At the end, tests on open type 72.5 kV switchgear were performed. The mechanical and leak tests, switching and internal fault tests gave good results.
