A new type of 2 V rocking chair lithium battery with nanocrystalline TiO{sub 2} (anatase) as the negative electrode and LiCoO{sub 2} or LiNi{sub 0.5}Co{sub 0.5}O{sub 2} as the positive electrode has been studied. The electrolyte solution was 1M LiN(CF{sub 3}SO{sub 2}){sub 2} in ethylene carbonate + 1.2-dimethoxyethane. The TiO{sub 2}/LiCoO{sub 2} and TiO{sub 2}/LiNi{sub 0.5}Co{sub 0.5}O{sub 2} batteries delivered about 50 mAh/g (based on the total mass of active electrode materials) during galvanostatic charge/discharge at {+-} 0.33 mA/cm{sup 2}. The latter battery showed a capacity drop of about 30% over 190 galvanostatic charge/discharge cycles.
