The development of high energy rechargeable lithium batteries has attracted worldwide attention. A number of transition metal oxides with layered structures have been studied extensively. Among them, LiCoO{sub 2} has become a center of attention because of its unique charge/discharge characteristics in propylene carbonate media. Binder-free, thin film (ca, 0.3 {micro}m) LiCoO{sub 2} electrodes have been prepared by the oxidation of metallic Co deposited on an Au substrate in molten (Li + K) CO{sub 3} at 650 C under a (9:1) O{sub 2}/CO{sub 2} atmosphere. Electrochemical measurements were carried out in 1 M LiClO{sub 4}/propylene carbonate electrolytes using cyclic voltammetry. It was demonstrated that cyclic voltammograms measured at 0.1 mV/s scan rate show a well-defined, reversible three-peaked wave due to extraction of Li{sup +} ions from the solid phase.
