The NPC study on research, development, and demonstration needs in the oil and gas industry points to catalysts with improved selectivities and increased plant and process reliability as areas having major impacts on refining operations. Other areas of development refiners expect to be key to improved performance, in both the short and long-terms are: Energy efficiency of operations; New approaches to refining have feedstocks; Feed composition`s relationship to process and product performance; Performance characteristics (including environmental effects) of new fuels; and Separations technologies. A figure shows how respondents to NPC`s survey rated 28 technologies, in terms of their expected impact on operations and their likelihood of becoming commercially available before the end of 1999. The paper discusses catalysis, the role of the national laboratories` involvement in oil and gas research projects, and environmental issues.
