Most of the maintenance activities of Nuclear Power Plants are performed during scheduled outages. A large portion of these activities involves piping systems. Evaluation of piping systems activities on a case-by-case basis is time consuming and is not cost effective. This paper present three (3) simplified procedures for maintenance of piping systems to be used by field personnel without the need for engineering evaluation. These procedures address addition of lead shielding, handling of pipe ends mismatches, and restraining of portable maintenance equipment. Southern California Edison has found that the use of these procedures for the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station is cost effective and reduces the outage duration. These procedures could be adapted to other plants.
