The detailed design of a solar energy collection system for providing process heat to a textile drying process is described. The solar collection subsystem uses 773 square meters (8313 square feet) of parabolic trough, single axis tracking, concentrating collectors to heat water in a high temperature water (HTW) loop. At the 2:00 pm September 21 time point (clear day) the solar collectors nominally generate 198/sup 0/C (389/sup 0/F) water with the HTW loop at 1.59 x 10/sup 6/ Pa(230 psi). This program has resulted in the installation of a solar energy collection system for providing process heat to a textile drying process. The solar collection subsystem uses 700 square meters (7500 square feet) of parabolic trough, single-axis tracking, concentrating collectors to heat water in a high temperature water (HTW) loop. The solar collectors nominally generate 193/sup 0/C (380/sup 0/F) water with the HTW loop at 1.9 x 10/sup 6/ Pa (275 psi). The operation and maintenance of this proof-of-concept solar dehydration facility in Fresno, California is reported. Phase I of this project incorporated the analysis and design of an inexpensive solar collector unit, coupled with a commercial heat recovery unit and rock storage facilities. These three components supplied about 85% of the hot air required by a single tunnel of the Lamanuzzi and Pantaleo (L and P) dehydration facility in Fresno, California. A proof-of-concept solar food dehydration project is presented. The goal is to prove that solar energy can be as economical and efficient as gas and petroleum products in the dehydration of fruits, nuts, vegetables, and similar food products that are consumed by man and animal. The solar dehydration system comprising 22,000 square feet of single glazed solar air collectors, 700 tons of rock heat storage, and a control system, was monitored and evaluated over a period of 133 days during normal drying operations.
