Measurement of the branching ratio for D{sup +} {yields} {bar K}{sup *} (892){sup 0} {mu}{sup +}{nu} and search for coherent charm production in 800 GeV/c proton-silicon interactions

This thesis reports the results from two independent analysis: In the first analysis, the branching ratio for the decay mode D{sup +} {yields} K{sup *0}{mu}{sup +}{nu} has been measured with two methods. The first uses D{sup 0} {yields} K{sup {minus}}{mu}{sup +}{nu} for normalization, and yields the result B(D{sup +} {yields} K{sup *0}{mu}{sup +}{nu}) = (3.25 {+-} 0.71 {+-} 0.75)%. From this method we also obtain the direct measurement {Gamma}(D{sup +} {yields} K{sup *0}{mu}{sup +}{nu})/{Gamma}(D{sup 0} {yields} K{sup {minus}}{mu}{sup +}{nu}) = 0.43 {+-} 0.09 {+-} 0.09. The second method uses the mode D{sup +} {yields} K{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup +} for normalization and yields B(D{sup +} {yields} K{sup *0}{mu}{sup +}{nu}) = (3.57 {+-} 0.96)%. In the second analysis, coherent charm production in 800 GeV/c proton-Silicon interactions was searched for in the decay modes D{sup +} {yields} K{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup =}{pi}{sup +}, D{sup 0} {yields} K{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup +}, D{sup 0} {yields} K{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup {minus}} and {Lambda}{sup +}{sub c} {yields} pK{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup +}. The data were recorded in the Fermilab E653 spectrometer. An active silicon wafer target assembly and a multiplicity jump trigger were used. No coherent charm signals were observed, and 90% confidence level upper limit for coherent charm pair production was determined to be 26 {mu}b per silicon nucleus. The results are interpreted as an upper limit of 0.2% on the amount of intrinsic charm in the proton.
