The ground water, soils, and sediments at many military sites are contaminated with TNT. Little is known about the transformation of nitroaromatics by microorganisms indigeneous to aquifer systems. This study investigates the potential for in situ biodegradation of TNT, 2,4-DNT, and 2,6-DNT by microbial communities indigeneous to the surface soils and aquifer materials at an inactive munitions plant near Weldon Spring, MO. 29 refs., 5 figs., 2 tabs.
