Theory of optical nonlinearity in {pi}-conjugated polymers and related materials

Thesis/Dissertation ·
OSTI ID:121191
A microscopic many-body theory is developed for the optical nonlinearity in {pi}-conjugated polymers and related materials. Within the framework of the extended Hubbard model, it is found that the bulk of the optical nonlinearity in {pi}-conjugated polymers is determined by four essential states although all the excited states are involved in the nonlinear optical processes. Electron-electron Coulomb interactions are found to play key roles in understanding the optical nonlinearity and to be responsible for the observed spectroscopic features. A variety of experiments are explained within a unified theory and many controversies are resolved.
