The {sup 2}H({ital {rvec p}},{gamma}){sup 3}He reaction has been studied in the energy region {ital E}{sub {ital p}}=80--0 keV ({ital E}{sub c.m.}=53.3--0 keV), where the quantities measured were {sigma}({theta},{ital E}) and {ital A}{sub {ital y}}({theta},{ital E}). Our result for the total {sup 2}H({ital p},{gamma}){sup 3}He {ital S} factor at {ital E}=0 is {ital S}(0)=0.121{plus_minus}0.012 eV b (including systematic error), which is 52% lower than the presently accepted value. Some astrophysical aspects of this result are discussed. We have also extracted the {ital E}1 and {ital M}1 {ital S}({ital E}) components using our detailed angular distribution data. These data will provide sensitive tests for three-body calculations which include Coulomb and meson exchange current effects.
