The majority of pressurized water reactors (PWRs) use Ag-In-Cd rods clad in 304 stainless steel to control the neutron flux within the core. Extensive studies have been made at Winfrith to characterize the behavior of this alloy under sever accident conditions in terms of both the core degradation processes and properties of the vapor/aerosol emission. These studies are summarized, and recommendations made for treating the release rates and aerosol characteristics in severe accident analysis calculations.
