Adsorption of lead in fly ash subgrades for waste disposal facilities

To minimize contaminant releases to groundwater from landfills, mining facilities, and transfer stations, the traditional emphasis has been on hydraulic containment by liners and collection systems. There has also been interest in the capability of a liner and its subgrade to attenuate contaminant concentrations. The latter has received more attention recently as an added dimension of environmental protection if long term problems arise in the primary containment system. This paper investigates the properties of an Appalachian bituminous fly ash for potential use as environmental facility subgrades. The concentration is on the ability of the fly ash to limit impacts of an acidic leachate with a high lead content, i.e. restrict seepage rate, neutralize the effluent and most importantly, retard lead migration.
