Direct Observation of a Magnetic Gap in Superconducting La{sub 1.85}Sr{sub 0.15}CuO{sub 4} ({ital T}{sub {ital c}}=37.3K)

Neutron inelastic scattering experiments have been performed on homogeneous single crystals of La{sub 1.85}Sr{sub 0.15}CuO{sub 4} with {ital T}{sub {ital c}}=37.3 K (at onset), higher than any previously studied single crystals. The temperature dependence of the low energy incommensurate peak intensity at {bold (}{pi}(1{plus_minus}{delta}),{pi}{bold )} and {bold (}{pi},{pi}(1{plus_minus}{delta}){bold )} exhibits a pronounced maximum near {ital T}{sub {ital c}}. In contrast to the results reported on lower {ital T}{sub {ital c}} crystals, the intensity below 3.5 meV dramatically decreases as the temperature decreases below {ital T}{sub {ital c}}, vanishing into the background below {similar_to}15 K. The behavior is consistent with predictions based on a {ital d}{sub {ital x}{sup 2}{minus}{ital y}{sup 2}} superconducting order parameter.
