An advanced pulverized coal combustion system with integrated emission controls and a net thermal efficiency of 42 percent is the goal of the US Department of Energy`s (DOE) low-emission boiler system, or LEBS, program. Industry teams headed by three of the major boiler manufacturers are developing conceptual designs. The target is an advanced, clean, pulverized-coal (PC) combustion system for base-load electricity generation in the 21st century with a cost of electricity lower than PC systems currently achieve. It`s intended to appeal to utilities who are skeptical about more radical new coal combustion technologies such as pressurized fluidized bed combustion or integrated coal gasification combined cycles.
