The characterization and sources of nuclear waste effluents arising from CANDU nuclear power plants will be reviewed. The design of the CANDU plant is based on the as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA) principle. Operation has shown that the CANDU plants easily meet regulatory limits and generally operate at the utility set target of one percent of this limit. There is increasing emphasis both within Canada and internationally to reduce environmental releases. Steps are being taken at operating CANDU plants and on future CANDU designs to achieve waste reduction or elimination, to introduce more effective waste handling methods and to improve treatment of radioactive and non-radioactive waste.
