The Project Konrad, the future German repository for low and intermediate level waste, currently at the final stages of the licensing procedure, is presented. The repository concept anticipates the final disposal of suitably conditioned LLW and ILW in underground chambers excavated to this purpose in a former iron ore mine. The Konrad mine located near Salzgitter in Lower Saxony, is judged particularly suitable for radioactive waste final disposal due to its very favorable characteristics regarding long-term isolation. The total space available for waste disposal amounts to some 1.1 million m{sup 3}, sufficient to accept some 600,000 m{sup 3} of conditioned wastes.
