Identification of the new isotope {sup 114}Ba and search for its {alpha} and cluster radioactivity
- Istituto di Fisica Generale Applicata dell`Universita di Milano Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare, Sezione di Milano, Milano (Italy)
Using the on-line mass separator at the Gesellschaft fuer Schwerionenforschung Unilac we produced {sup 114}Ba through the {sup 58}Ni({sup 58}Ni,2{ital n}){sup 114}Ba reaction and measured its production cross section to be 0.20{sub {minus}0.09}{sup +0.13} {mu}b. The new isotope {sup 114}Ba represents the heaviest {ital N}={ital Z}+2 nucleus known to date. With {Delta}{ital E}-{ital E} telescopes we measured the total ({beta}-decay) half-life to be {ital T}{sub {beta}}=0.43{sub {minus}0.15}{sup +0.30} s and the partial {alpha}-decay half-life to be {ital T}{sub {alpha}}{ge}1.2{times}10{sup 2} s (1 MeV{le}{ital E}{sub {alpha}}{le}4 MeV) for {sup 114}Ba. With track detectors we found a half-life for spontaneous {sup 12}C emission {ital T}{sub {ital C}}{ge}1.1{times}10{sup 3} s based on three carbon events.
