RHIC RF System Noise Requirements
- Brookhaven National Lab. (BNL), Upton, NY (United States)
The luminosity lifetime of high Z particle beams in RHIC will be limited by intra-beam scattering. In storage mode it is assumed that the rf phase space "buckets" will always be fully occupied. This is in contrast to SPS and Tevatron operation where the bunches occupy a fraction (<1/2) of the available phase space area. In the SPS the rf voltage is supplied by broad band traveling wave structures. In RHIC however very high Q standing wave cavities will be employed. The effect of the cavity time constant τc and its compensation in the phase and amplitude control loops on the rf noise requirements will be discussed in the first part of this report.
