The use of outreach workshops and loan trunks to infuse molecular biology into the high school laboratory
- Louisiana State Univ., Baton Rouge, LA (United States); and others
An outreach program was initiated to foster interest in science by introducing high school students to current molecular biological techniques and applications. Hands-on exercises are used to stimulate interest and clarify concepts in molecular biology. The first part of the program is a workshop to familiarize teachers with the equipment, techniques in molecular biology, and student exercises. Teachers that complete the workshop can then borrow the equipment, supplies, and instructions to allow students to do basic experiments in molecular biology. The program is administered by university faculty in biology. There have been three teacher workshops. To date, over 800 high school students (forty-one classes) have used the equipment at twenty high schools.
