  1. Univ. of Hawaii, Hilo, HI (United States)

Since 1988, the University of Hawaii at Hilo Science and Education faculty have jointly created programs for pre- and in-service teachers, and to improve science teaching, to increase the number of science teachers, and to improve scientific literacy in the general population. The National Sciences major, approved in 1991, with both elementary and secondary teaching options, has gone from three degree seeking candidates in the fall of 1991 to fifty-nine in the spring of 1994. The major provides elementary teachers with a general science degree and teaching certification; and secondary teachers with a more intense general science degree, a specialized minor, and teaching certification. Additionally, a new 18 credit Natural Sciences Certificate for in-service elementary teachers, designed to enhance their scientific background and classroom methodology, has already attracted over 250 teachers within the last year.
