The goals and objectives for the Hughes High School Scholars, Science Motivation Program and Hughes/NIH Research for Teachers programs have been integrated to provide common experiences, even though they are funded from separate sources. High school juniors with a strong interest in the biomedical sciences and secondary school biology and chemistry teachers have the opportunity to become active members of a research team at CSU. Life sciences faculty members act as mentors during the research experience and provide topical research project opportunities. Participants are required to write a scientific research paper and present an oral report. Students and teachers are exposed to the complete scientific process by actually {open_quotes}doing{close_quotes} science and reporting their results. From these experiences, students gain an enthusiasm for going to college and promote science and research as potential career goals. The teacher participants indicate they become rejuvenated to return to the classroom with many new ideas for classroom activities. They maintain connections with their mentors and become strong promoters for Colorado State University and for life sciences research. These programs kindle the interest of high school students and rekindle the flame of teachers toward teaching, research, and the scientific process.
