Project GEMMA started in 1990 as a program for teachers of mathematics at all grade levels, with the goal of permitting those teachers to learn first-hand some applications of math in the work place. It has evolved into a multi-faceted program which is now open to teachers of math and science. Secondary school teachers participate in an in-depth work experience in laboratories, industrial facilities, or businesses. These assignments are generally of eight or ten weeks duration. An integral part of the program is a series of seminars wherein teachers learn about the work experiences of other teachers. At the end of the program, teachers present specific {open_quotes}transfer plans{close_quotes} which detail how teachers will take the results of their experiences back into the classroom. These plans are available for use by other teachers. Elementary school teachers participate in week-long seminars held at many sites where secondary school teachers are working. Evaluations of the programs show generally very possible experiences, both for teachers and for mentors.
