Princeton`s science advisors: A neural network
Princeton`s Science Advisor Program aims to place a Science Advisor in every school - elementary through high school - in eight school districts, both urban and suburban, in New Jersey`s Mercer and Hunterdon counties. Each scientist visits his or her school regularly, getting to know the teachers and their needs. Each advisor is trained during a summer workshop and is supported throughout the year by a network of electronically linked scientists who are always on call. As front line activists, Advisors interpret and communicate the needs of teachers and their students, and then convert advice, information, and services from the network into usable form. Since the program is designed to be a true partnership between the schools and local scientists, teachers and their educational concerns are its driving force. Ultimately, the support and encouragement of teachers provide the energy and rationale for making the experiment a lasting success and for truly transforming the doing of science in the classroom.
