Structural state of manganese ions in alkali-free aluminosilicate glasses
- S.M. Kirov Belarussian Technological Institute, Minsk (Russian Federation)
Nonalkali CaO-BaO-Al{sub 2}O{sub 3}-TiO{sub 2}-SiO{sub 2} systems are a basis for production of wear-resistant glass ceramics with increased mechanical strength. These glass ceramics are used for production of articles operating under dry friction. In order to reduce the tendency of glass ceramics to accumulate static electricity on the surface of articles made of them, their compositions were modified by manganese oxide, i.e., the oxide of an element with a variable valence. In the present study 2.5 to 20.0 wt.% MnO was introduced into glass compositions above 100%, i.e., the proportion of all the other glass components remained unchanged. Manganese oxide was added to the charge as pyrolusite MnO{sub 2} that decomposed at high temperatures to lower manganese oxidation levels.
