Pipelines are among the most efficient and effective means to transport a large quantity of fluid. There are cases where the solid particles are present in the fluid. The minimum flow velocity that assures the positive movement of the solid particles is defined as the critical velocity. A literature survey singled out nineteen correlations of critical velocity for horizontal pipelines transporting liquid. An example case was used to illustrate the value and trend of the critical velocity predicted by these correlations. Experimental data are used to show the effects of fluid velocity, size range of the sand particles and volume fraction of sands on the critical velocity. The effects of gas on the critical velocity of two-phase flow are described. Oroskar and Turian`s correlation is recommended for oil field pipeline applications.
