Determination of instantaneous local particle density of a fluid-particle suspension requires satisfying both the time scale relation and the volume scale relation. The latter is satisfied when the characteristic dimension of a probe such as isokinetic sampling probe or an electrostatic probe is larger than the particles. Small measuring volume in the laser phase Doppler particle analyzer in comparison to particle sizes calls for averaging based on the continuum counter part of time averaging. This procedure was validated by comparing simultaneous velocity and mass flux measurements to the laser phase Doppler measurements.
