Bronze: The other surfacing material

When a surfacing application requires resistance to corrosion, abrasion, friction and oxidation, the first welding materials that come to mind are iron, cobalt, nickel-based alloys and the carbide particle materials. Not as prominent are the copper-alloy surfacing electrodes and filler metals, yet they play an important role in resisting corrosion, erosion, cavitation, and metal-to-metal wear. Generally, the copper alloys that are used for surfacing fall into four copper-alloy families. They are: copper-zinc, copper-silicon, copper-tin and copper-aluminum. The copper-zinc alloys are used for very soft bearing surfaces and mild corrosion; the copper-silicon alloys for corrosion-resistant surfaces; copper-tin alloys for soft bearing and corrosion-resistant surfaces; and the copper-aluminum alloys for bearings of higher hardness and corrosion, erosion, cavitation and wear-resistant surfaces.
