An enhancement technique was developed for natural-convection heat transfer from vertical finned plates. The horizontal plates attached on the finned plates with equal spacing were utilized to promote heat transfer. These horizontal plates redirect the high-temperature fluid flow from the vicinity of the base plate to the outside of the boundary layer, and promote the low-temperature, incoming flow from the far wall region toward the base plate. The overall and local heat-transfer coefficient using such plates were measured and compared to those of untreated finned plates. It was found that the overall and local heat-transfer coefficients were increased by 20 and 40 percent, respectively, when horizontal plates with appropriate height and pitch were used.
