The number of mitochrondia and chloroplasts in the chlorenchyma cells of pine needles (Pinus sylvestris), birch leaves (Betula pubescens), shrub leaves (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, Vaccinium vitis-idaea, V. myrtillus, V. uliginosum) and herbaceous plant leaves (Campanula rotundi folia, Cornus swetica, Potentilla erecta, Solidago lapponica) from plants growing 10 and 65 km from the {open_quotes}Severonickel{close_quotes} smelter (Kola peninsula) was compared. The leave parts without visible damages from the middle third of the leaves were fixed. The intact chlorenchyma cells were investigated under the electron microscope. Morphometric analysis showed that the chloroplasts number in the mosophyll cells of the investigated species doesn`t depend on impact of the pollutants. The mitochondria number differs insignificantly at the leaf cell of the deciduous and herbaceous plants. The old leaves at Vaccinium vitis-idaea by 94% and at Arctostaphylos uva-ursi by 80%. The mitochondria number at the three-year-old pine needles increases at 107% in damaged area.
