For nearly 200 years, miners in Ostrava-Karvina coalfield have faced difficult geological problems, and finding solutions to these problems has been a profound test of the miners` skills and artisanship. This has been true especially during past decades of this century when manual labor was replaced by mechanization and automation. Modern machines are less adaptable to changing natural conditions and, moreover, require detailed data that express changeable underground geological conditions. These circumstances are much more pronounced today, when activity in the coalfields is influenced by factors that accompany the advent of the free market economy; therefore, it is useful to introduce basic data illustrating the geology and the possibilities and problems faced in the Czechoslovak part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin. The paper describes coal-bearing formations, coal petrology and chemical-technological characteristics of coal seams, coal-bearing capacity and coal reserves, geological factors complicating mining activities in the Ostrava-Karvina coalfield, and the mineral wealth of this coalfield.
