The US Department of Energy (DOE) protects a wide range of assets through the use of access controls. Basic requirements are defined in departmental policy; however, the procedures and equipment used for implementation by sites and contractors varies. The DOE has conducted a survey of processes and equipment used to conduct access control at their facilities. This review was conducted via visits to DOE sites and interviews with staff members in the areas of physical security, automated systems, and badging and visitor control. Data have been collected and documented in a structured format for retrieval and analysis. This paper discusses some of the survey results. The data collected will assist the DOE in their policy development activities in the area of access control. These activities include important decisions concerning the national implementation of the DOE Common Badge and complex-wide visitor access control systems.
