Bernstein modes of a nonuniform plasma near the fundamental of the electron cyclotron frequency

The absorption of microwave radiation by a plasma column in a longitudinal magnetic field has been studied in a considerable number of papers. These treatments have revealed the linear structure of the absorption near the harmonics of the electron cyclotron frequency, beginning with the first. Buchsbaum and Hasegawa proposed a model according to which the observed absorption lines are ascribed to the excitation of long-wavelength (in comparison with the Larmor radius) longitudinal cyclotron oscillations (Bernstein modes), which are localized on a nonuniform plasma density profile and have a discrete spectrum. In the present work we report observations of the linear absorption structure near the fundamental of the electron cyclotron frequency. The excited oscillations are interpreted as small-scale (on the order of the electron Larmor radius and smaller) Berstein modes. The eigenvalue spectrum of these oscillation obtained in a simple theoretical model agrees with the results of the experiment.
