The problem of quasihelical symmetry in the paraxial approximation
The semianalytical analysis of the so-called quasisymmetric stellerator configuration begun by Isaev and Shafranov is extended by means of the paraxial approximation. Expressions are obtained for the Boozer coordinates. The implications of the quasisymmetry condition for the magnetic configuration are studied. Equations are derived which relate the displacements, the triangularity of the magnetic surfaces, and other parameters of the quasisymmetry of the system. The equilibrium of a particular configuration is calculated numerically; the results agree with those for the three-dimensional calculation of Nuhrenberg and Zille. These relations can be used to optimize the equilibrium and stability properties of the system and to investigate transport processes. 11 refs., 1 fig.
