Virtualization has become the standard for computing within organizations. The questions that arise when considering virtualization and cloud computing are whether these systems are, or can be, as secure as physical machines, and whether they are appropriate for production services. This paper identifies the security concerns that are associated with virtualization and cloud computing, and how they can be addressed in order to properly secure these systems. In order to accomplish this, the first goal of this paper was to identify relevant security concerns. The second goal was to identify measures that could be put in place to mitigate and address these concerns. HPC-3’s production services are evaluated in the context of available virtualization technologies, with recommendations for appropriate options.
