Numerical simulation of stimulated Raman scattering for beat-wave current drive in the T-15 tokamak

Stimulated Raman scattering applied to the problem of beat-wave current drive is studied using an Eulerian Vlasov code, for parameters relevant to the T-15 tokamak. The plasma is described by a 1-D relativistic Vlasov equation in the direction parallel to the static magnetic field, and by fluid equations in the direction perpendicular to the magnetic field. The low noise level of the Vlasov code allows precise measurements to be made of action transfer between photons, plasmons, and electrons in Raman scattering processes, with a very good representation of the low-density regions of phase space which are usually badly delineated in the particle in cell methods. The results of four simulations are presented, in which plasma waves generated by backward Raman scattering, are presented. 2 refs., 9 figs.
